A commercial black cow with a Romagnola sired bull calf- 1 day old named Cobalt. Weight 76 lbs. Visit us again in ninety days (7/08) for updated pictures and info on Cobalt and mom Pricilla. (We apologize for the mud, but Cobalt came during a 3" rain)

This page is dedicated to Cobalt, a Romangus (Romagnola / Angus cross) bull calf born April 1, 2008. Due to several inquiries via e-mail / phone and many visitors asking what the crosses looked like, we decided to buy a commercial black cow and breed her to one of our herd sires to have something to show and to document the progress online to let perspective buyers see what a Romagnola bull can do for them.

In answer to several inquiries, when Romagnola bulls are crossed with a strong black genetic based cow, the results will be a black calf. Whereas if there are recessive red genes in the dam, sometimes it will throw a red calf or a red-tinted calf, which a lot of feeder buyers consider the "right kind of red" . Either way, the advantage of using a Romagnola bull on any breed will result in a hybrid cross with a greater weaning weight ranging from 30 to 100 pounds which at today's prices will more than offset a $4 per cwt premium for being black and weighing 30 to 100 pounds less by using a bull of the same breed.

Also a hybrid will be more athletic at birth and be able to get up and nurse quickly, also will be more resistant to disease and stress.

Every few months we will post a new picture of Cobalt so you can see the progress of his weight and development. This will give you a better idea of what you can expect when using a Romagnola Bull with your herd.
